The VW Polo is now only manufactured in South Africa

Volkswagen has ended production of the Polo in Europe after 40 years, and now the model is manufactured at the company’s factory in the town of Kariega in South Africa.

The Polo was built at the German company’s plant in Pamplona, Spain, with the plant being upgraded to be able to build two new small electric SUVs from 2026, with one, the ID2 all sold under VW badges and the other , the Epiq, to be sold under the Skoda brands. Both models will be based on the smaller, front-wheel-drive version of the MEB platform, and are expected to have a starting price of around 25,000 euros.

VW built around 8.4 million Polos at its plant in Pamplona, Spain, with the VW T-Cross and Taigo continuing to be built at the Pamplona plant alongside the new electric models.

Sales of the Polo have declined in recent years as buyers have turned to small SUV models such as the T-Cross and T-Roc. In the period January – August 2024, Volkswagen sold 90,107 Polos in Europe, when 10 years ago the number was almost double during the same period.
