President Joe Biden said Tuesday that the governments of Israel and Lebanon have accepted a proposal to “end the devastating conflict between Israel and Lebanon.”
The US president said the “good news” is that the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon will begin at 4 am local time on Wednesday, according to CNN.
“Under the agreement reached today, effective tomorrow at 4 a.m. local time, the fighting on the Lebanese-Israeli border will end,” Biden said during remarks at the White House.
The Lebanese army will resume control over its territory, the American president also said.
“Over the next 60 days, Israel will gradually withdraw its forces and civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities and begin rebuilding their homes,” Joe Biden said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid out the reasons behind the deal in a taped statement on Tuesday. He said there are three “main reasons” why Israel can accept a cease-fire in Lebanon.
“Focus on the Iranian threat,” the prime minister said, according to CNN.
A second reason is “to give our forces a rest break and to replenish stocks”, the Israeli prime minister also said.
“Separate the fronts”, said the prime minister referring to the war in Gaza.
