The way to manage contacts on WhatsApp will be a little different

WhatsApp is announcing a major overhaul to how you manage your contacts. Until recently we knew that WhatsApp contacts is the list of contacts that we have installed on our devices. But this can be a big problem for those who lose their phone and haven’t backed up their contacts. It can also be a headache for those who share a phone, as well as those who manage multiple accounts with separate contacts on one device.

Fortunately, WhatsApp has a new solution to offer: a built-in contact manager. This will allow you to save contacts in the app so you won’t lose them if you change phones.

The first and basic step to implement this new feature is to have the ability to save contacts on WhatsApp Web and Windows. WhatsApp owner Meta says you will eventually be able to save contacts to other connected devices.

The contacts you save on WhatsApp use a new privacy protection storage technology called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS)which says Meta keeps encrypted names and numbers and your it only allows you to access them.

The new contacts feature will, at some point in the future, be followed by a username system that will allow you to use the app without linking your account to your phone number.
