Problems from bad weather in Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Berea and Kilkis

Already, the change was noticeable in western and northern Greece, where we had rains and strong storms in places. In fact, there have been problems in various areas of Thessaloniki since yesterday’s storm. In the area of Olympiada, a tree fell in the municipal parking lot, causing minor damage to cars parked there. The tree was uprooted by the strong winds. Trees also fell in Kalamaria and Kordelio, while a roof was engulfed in flames by lightning in Agios Charalambos Lagadas. No one was in the house, 6 firefighters rushed to the scene with 3 vehicles. Small outbreaks of fire in dry grass occurred in Vagiochori, Nea Apollonia and Stavros due to lightning and were dealt with immediately.

The scene was similar in Ioannina. The roads, mainly towards the lake side, turned into rivers and in the low-lying parts of the city the fire department received dozens of calls to pump water out of flooded houses. Damage, due to the hailstorm, was also caused to crops.

The strong wind detached a large piece of roof on Tekmonos Street in Votanikos which landed on cars parked in the neighborhood. Miraculously, no one was in danger since apparently drivers and passers-by hid to protect themselves from the storm.

Problems from the sudden bad weather also existed in Veria, Kilkis, Giannitsa, Turnavos, Imathia, Kozani, Pella and Corinthia. In Pella in the region of Almopia, rain and lightning caused damage to the electricity supply network, dozens of villages were left without electricity.

The change in weather will be characterized by the high frequency of lightning and heavy rains, which will generally be quite local in nature and will not last long, while it is quite likely that they will be accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind.

A map of meteo.gr shows that until 23:13 on Sunday night there were almost 9,000 lightning strikes, with the activity mainly starting in the early afternoon.

After all, the Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Change, Vassilis Kikilias, in a post on X yesterday emphasized that 10 of the 44 fires that occurred on Sunday were caused by lightning, while he asked everyone to be alert in the coming days as intense lightning activity is expected.
