This week at Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” conference, we got a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the music video for The Weeknd’s latest single, “Dancing in the Flames,” shot entirely on the new iPhone 16 Pro. The music video, directed by Anton Tammi and director of photography Erik Henrikkson, is out now.
The new iPhone 16 Pro is the most advanced iPhone ever, with a larger display and the thinnest bezel in Apple’s lineup. The professional-grade camera system offers all-new creative features, including 4K 120fps recording with Dolby Vision for smooth, slow-motion video — as seen in the “Dancing in the Flames” music video. Four new studio-quality microphones preserve the authenticity of recorded sounds, while Audio Mix uses machine learning to identify and separate background elements from speech, giving users three voice options: In-Frame Mix, Studio Mix, Cinematic Mix, and more. iPhone 16 Pro also features the powerful A18 Pro chip, significantly longer battery life, and is available in four stunning titanium finishes: Black, White, Natural, and Desert.
Last week, The Weeknd revealed the title of his latest album, Hurry Up Tomorrow , the culmination of his acclaimed trilogy. Following Dawn FM and After Hours , this album is set to take his artistic narrative to the next level, tackling the existential and personal themes that resonate so well with fans. The anticipation for this final chapter of the trilogy is palpable, as it promises to be a huge leap forward for The Weeknd as an artist.
Director of photography, Eric Henrikkson:
Using the iPhone 16 Pro starts to blur the line between what’s commonly considered a “professional camera” and what isn’t, and I think that’s really going to help young filmmakers.
I was impressed by how the iPhone 16 was able to capture the highlights, the deep blacks. We were shooting with very bright HDMI lights that were hitting the rain, and that worried me. How would the iPhone capture those highlights? How would the contrast be? How would it look on the Weeknd’s face? And when I saw the results, I was honestly blown away.
When I was shooting the iPhone 16 Pro handheld, right next to the Weeknd, as he walked through the fog, I felt like it was a very intimate moment. It’s not a big device, it’s small, so it was very easy to use.
Working with the iPhone 16 Pro, which now records in 4K and 120 fps, is really a breakthrough when it comes to post-production. You can smoothly increase or decrease the speed of the film and work closely with the post-production specialist on set. We did the tests and we were both very excited when we saw the results.
Shooting 4k and 120fps on the iPhone 16 Pro really helped us slow things down – the rain, the fog, the movement of the Weeknd as he runs in the rain. Creating epic slow-mo shots and how the iPhone handled it was something we were extremely happy with.
