For everyone present, it was one of the most difficult, if not the most challenging day of their lives. Starting with wife Meredith.

She gathered the last remnants of her strength and stood in front of the microphone during the funeral in Pennsylvania and spoke to the grieving crowd, which also included former NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

“During the last six months, Johnny and I have lived the most beautiful period of our lives as a family of four,” said the widow of one of the most talented hockey players of her generation.

“In reality, however, there were not four of us, but five,” she surprised those present. “I am nine weeks pregnant, my third child will be born,” she added.

Meredith even revealed what her husband’s reaction was when he learned that they were expecting another addition to the family.

“He immediately hugged me and kissed me,” she said.

Johnny Gaudreau died on August 29 at the age of 31, along with his two-year-younger brother, Matthew, in a crash after they were hit by drunk driver Sean Higgins.
