The Hungarian women’s basketball team lost 74-67 to the Slovenians in Ljubljana on Sunday in the fourth round of the European Championship qualifying series, so it will be decided in February whether they will qualify for the European Championship in June. The Hungarian team played in the semifinals of the last European Championship.
Result, Group B, Round 4:
Slovenia-Hungary 74-67 (19-18, 20-16, 13-14, 22-19)
The scorers: Friskovec 23, Shepherd 17, Lisec 15, Sivka 10, Cvijanovic 6, Jelenc 3, and Határ 15, Studer 11, Dubei 11, Lelik 7, Papp 6, Juhász 5, Kiss 5, Török 5, Dombai 2
Last November, the Hungarians beat the Slovenians 70-51 in the opener in Sopron, then they won 67-56 in Finland, and then – after a year’s break – they surprisingly lost to the Bulgarians 83-68 in Miskolc on Thursday.
In Sunday’s battle between teams with a score of 2/1, the Hungarians were even better at 3-4, but three minutes later the hosts were ahead by six points. It was not possible to take the lead in the second quarter either, captain Péter Völgyi, who also managed the preparation of the champion DVTK, could rely mainly on Határ Bernadette, who was playing in Spain. On the other side, Shepard was mainly in his element, and with the seventh triple, the Adriatic guard already moved to eight points (39-31). Ágnes Studer’s last-second triple made the score 39-34 at the break.
We couldn’t drive
After a change of half, the visiting team caught up to one point, but the Slovenians made another three, Shepard was still unstoppable under the backboard, and soon the rebound ratio was 36-24. Starting from 52-48, the home team started the final period with a 7-0 run, to which a 5-0 answer was received, at which time Határ took the national team on his shoulders, but Friskovec showed amazing throwing form. There is no chance for Hungarian success at the start, so the national team is 2/2 in its group after four rounds.
The Hungarians will play their last two qualifiers in February. The 40th Women’s European Championship will be hosted by Brno, Hamburg, Bologna and Piraeus between 18 and 29 June 2025 – with the final in the Greek port city – marking the first time that the continental tournament will be held in four countries.
In the other match of the group:
Finland-Bulgaria 85-72
The position: 1. Slovenia 7 points, 2. HUNGARY 6 (272-264), 3. Finland 6 (278-288), 4. Bulgaria 5
