The Hungarian women’s handball team won 30-27 as a guest of world champion and Olympic silver medalist France in Thursday’s warm-up match in Toulon. Our hero was Zsófi Szemerey, who defended in amazing form.

After a hectic start, Dorottya Faluvégi scored the first goal of the match in the third minute, and in the first minutes – although there were many mistakes on both sides – the Hungarian national team was more focused and, based on the saves of Zsófia Szemerey, who is playing in France, took a 5-2 lead after ten minutes. After fourteen minutes, with Hungary leading 8-4, the French captain called for a time-out, but this did not significantly change the picture of the game, Golovin’s team already led 15-9, and the hosts halved this difference before the break.

After the turnover, the host got closer to 15-14, taking advantage of the eight-minute silence of the Hungarian national team, while Debrecen’s right winger Vivien Grosch made his debut in Vladimir Golovin’s national team. Szemerey continued to excel in goal, this was what was needed for the national team to start the last ten minutes with a 26-23 advantage, the inaccuracies showed that there were important omissions in both teams.

Within the final four minutes, the French were back up minus one, a Hungarian seven-meter shot was missed, but Szemerey also saved one, and they even managed to increase the advantage in the first half: 14 years after the group match of the 2010 European Championship in Lillehammer, the French succeeded again to surpass, moreover, that the rival never once led in the preparatory match.

Szemerey finished with 16 saves. On the French side, Laura Glauser, Ferencváros goalkeeper, saved 14 shots, Orlane Kanor, FTC’s shot putter, scored seven goals as the most successful player in the field, while Océane Sercien-Ugolin, Debrecen’s right-hander, scored twice. The French and Hungarian national teams will meet again on Saturday, the venue of that meeting will be Tremblay-en-France.
