The word that, according to the voters, characterized the past year the most is genocide. The gesture of the year chosen by the Association of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Associations of Slovenia is peace.
The word genocide refers to the planned destruction of ethnic, racial or religious groups.
Action Word of the year since 2016, they have been preparing at the Fran Ramovš Institute for the Slovenian Language of the ZRC SAZU.
This year’s finalists for the word of the year were: boiler, brutal, amphibian, genocide, hybrid work, kiting, commissioner, disconnection, network fee, teachers and son-in-law.
The candidates for the word of the year were chosen by an expert committee, which includes representatives of ZRC SAZU Kozma Ahačič, Marijan Dović, Dan Podjed, Agata Tomažič and campaign manager Simona Klemenčič, Slavko Jerič from the MMC RTV Slovenia portal and Valerija Skof from the Association of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Associations of Slovenia.
The commission also chose a newly created woman in 2024. That’s it pretourwhich is the equivalent of the English term overtourism or excessive tourism.
Last year, after the most extensive floods in the history of Slovenia, the word of the year became catch.
