The world star of documentary photography is opening the 12th VISUALIZATOR today

International photography festival VIZUALIZATOR brings a spectacular start to the 12th edition – distinguished photographer, winner of the World Press Photo Award, Nicolò Filippo Rosso will open the festival with a touching and impressive exhibition Exodus. After impressing audiences at prestigious events around the world, including the PhotoVille festival in New York and a special exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels, this powerful visual story about migration comes to Belgrade audiences for the first time.

The official opening of the exhibition and festival is on Wednesday, November 20 at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Applied Art (Vuka Karadžića 18).

The opening will be attended by the author Nicolò Filippo Rosso, the director of the Italian Institute Roberto Cincotta and the ambassador of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, Jan Bratu.

About the exhibition

Exhibition Exodus brings a poignant chronicle of migration routes through Latin America. The photographs show the struggles, losses and hopes of people forced to leave their homes in search of a better life. Since 2018, Rosso has been documenting the journeys of migrants from Venezuela, through Colombia and Central America, to the border with the United States of America. His photos are a testimony of hope and survival, but also of violence, corruption and economic crises that destroy societies across the continent.

During the year 2023, Rosso joined groups of migrants in their mass movements northwards. He traveled with them through the harsh Chihuahuan Desert, climbed on the roofs of the notorious freight train The Beast and documented arrivals at the US border.

Photos from the series Exoduspublished in leading world media such as The New York Times and National Geographic, reveal the universal struggle for a dignified life, encouraging dialogue on the key issues of our time.

The project Exodus was awarded the World Press Photo Award in 2020. Nicolò Filippo Rosso stated at the time: “Photographs encourage action and change, and I photograph with that intention.”

A ten thousand people caravan moves by walking and on trucks towards a barricade made by Guatemalan police officers to prevent them from continuing their northward journey.
By chance, months after, the photographer met, in Mexico, a family he had photographed when the caravan had begun. A family of six, they crossed into the United States three times and were expelled back to Mexico each time.
They eventually had their older children, ages 5 and 7, crossing the border alone, a telephone number scribbled with a marker on their arms so that American authorities could have their uncle living in Texas taking care of them. They crossed with their other two babies and finally reunited with their children in Texas, where they started the asylum-seeking process. When asked by authorities to prove they had walked with the four children from Honduras, the photos depicting them together in Honduras and then in Mexico served as proof.
