Chairman of the Board of Istanbul Tuberculosis Association, Prof. Dr. Zeki Kılıçaslan spoke to Cumhuriyet during the 5-11 January Tuberculosis Education and Propaganda Week.

Listing the risk groups for the disease, Kılıçaslan stated that people who are malnourished, smoke and drink alcohol, have silicosis (occupational dust disease) and all other diseases that impair the immune system catch the disease more easily and said: “In Turkey, BCG vaccination takes a long time to protect children from tuberculosis, two months after birth.” It has been implemented successfully for years. However, the effect of the BCG vaccine is not sufficient. “The world urgently needs a new modern vaccine,” he said.
