The world’s second spherical concert hall will be built in Abu Dhabi

Sphere Entertainment and the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism announced that the world’s second spherical entertainment hall, called Sphere, will be built in the United Arab Emirates. They assure that the new facility in Abu Dhabi will “reflect the scale” of the first such structure in the world, located in Las Vegas.

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, said in a press release that the planned investment is part of the tourism strategy of the capital of the UAE for 2030, which aims to “further cementing Abu Dhabi’s position as a vibrant center of culture and innovation.”

It has not yet been announced which architectural studio will handle the new project. However, Populous, a company specializing in stadium construction, designed both the Las Vegas Sphere and a similar facility in London. However, the latter was not built because there were fears that it would disturb the residents. The company ultimately withdrew, criticizing the planning process as a “political football game between rival parties.” James L. Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, said the Abu Dhabi location will continue the company’s vision for a “global network of properties.”

For now neither the exact location of the facility nor the construction schedule were disclosed.

The American structure was opened in September 2023 and since then, numerous concerts of international stars have been held there. It is 112 m high and 157 m wide, making it the largest spherical structure in the world. Inside there is an LED screen with the highest resolution in the world, while outside there are 1.2 million LEDs the size of a hockey puck. The whole thing is programmable, so you can display dynamic images on a huge scale. The total cost was $2.3 billion.
