The Xperia 5 VI model will no longer be released in 2024

Sony recently announced a major shift in its strategy for the Xperia smartphone line. According to an official statement made public during a press conference in Japan, the company revealed that it will skip the launch of the Xperia 5 VI this year.

Typically, Sony used to launch two flagship phones per year: one from the Xperia 1 series and another from the Xperia 5 series, along with a mid-range Xperia 10 model. This consistent approach allowed the company to cover different market segments and meet the varied needs of consumers.

Strategy reassessment

However, the ever-changing landscape of the smartphone market and evolving user preferences have prompted Sony to reassess its strategy.

Masao Mizuno, general manager of the Mobile Business Department of Sony Marketing’s Mobile Business Division, and Shinji Yuhara, general manager, offered explanations for this unexpected decision.

User migration and impact on series

According to the two, the company has seen an increase in the number of users migrating from the older models of the Xperia 5 series to the latest flagship, the Xperia 1 VI.

This trend has led to a decrease in the already limited user base of the Xperia 5 series, prompting Sony to reconsider the launch of a new model this year.

Instead of introducing the Xperia 5 VI, the Japanese have announced that they will continue to sell the Xperia 5 V model in 2024 as well.

Changes in screen strategy

Another notable change in Sony’s strategy is the switch from the 21:9 aspect ratio 4K screen for the 1 V model to a 19.5:9 aspect ratio FHD+ screen for the 1 VI variant.

The future of the Xperia 5 series

While the company hasn’t given concrete information about the future of this lineup, many are wondering if we’ll see a 5 VI next year or if the series will be discontinued entirely. This has enjoyed popularity due to its compact format, with most models having a 6.1-inch screen.

However, in today’s smartphone landscape, where larger screen sizes have become the norm, Sony seems to be re-evaluating the market positioning of this series. It remains to be seen how the Xperia product line will evolve and what surprises Sony has in store for us in the future.
