Here are some reasons why dogs are more prone to frostbite in winter:

They are left in the cold – It is common for some people to let the dog wait outside the store when they are shopping, even though it is cold. But even letting the dog wait for a short while can mean a great risk of frostbite.
You take too long walks with the dog – Sandra Douglas instead advises to take short walks more often, so that the dog does not have time to cool down.
You are not protecting the dog’s paws – Use paw salve or protective wax and dry the paws thoroughly afterwards.
You don’t dress the dog warmly enough – Small and short-furred dogs especially need extra warm clothes in the winter, such as warming blankets.
