Directed by Zsombor Dyga, the action film titled Operation Kabul has been shooting since August, we previously reported on the work in the hellish heat in our on-site report. A work that makes up for the gap, since in the history of Hungarian film production, there has never been a film drama with a military theme of this volume, which – now we can reassure everyone! – apart from the uniform, it has nothing to do with the comedy series Angyalbőrben, which conquered in the early 90s. The crew of the Svenk cinema magazine, shown on HírTV on Saturday evening, visited the filming in Zsámbék and asked the main actors.
Tamás Borovics, the actor of the National Theater of Szeged who has received many professional awards, plays the chief of the rescue operation, a lieutenant colonel, in the upcoming film. In the filming report, he said that the military had been left out of his life, but now he was able to get a taste of this “work that requires the whole person” up close, and several scenes were filmed that made one’s stomach cringe when he thought about what they might go through, who work in real deployments.
This film is about the Hungarian soldiers who took part in the rescue operation in Kabul and commemorates those who stayed there.

According to Cápa (the nickname of MMA fighter Gusztáv Dietz), who played his role in the Kabul operation and the Asia Express, he also owes it to the fact that “among Hungarian actors there are few low-voiced, piercing-eyed, ugly-looking” characters that scare everyone.
Cápa started out as an amateur actor with directors who let him shape the role as he feels, he can work well, and it’s good to work with them – he told the Svenk reporter on the set. He thinks with gratitude – he emphasized – that the members of the professional crew, the professional actors and the professional soldiers who took part in the filming helped him a lot.
During the preparation, Dávid Hajmási, known from the series Homecoming and this time playing a tried and tested sergeant, also talked to the professional soldiers who were out in Kosovo, they told about their “experiences”, some of which were, of course, in the news at the time, but – he said – “that’s enough it’s hard when these things are shared with you first-hand by someone who actually happened to them, who was in the news.”
The 47-day shooting began in the summer, the main locations of the film included the military airport in Kecskemét, the ruined city of Újdörögd, the sand mine in Fót, the Central BM Hospital and the quarry in Zsámbék, where the Hungarian soldiers’ camp in Afghanistan was built.
The Kabul operation uses fictional elements to process the 2021 Shaman Shield military rescue operation, during which the Hungarian Armed Forces rescued 540 people, including 180 children, from Afghanistan. At the center of the story is a Hungarian doctor, played by Blanka Mészáros, the other main character is Gábor Jászberényi, in addition to them, actors such as Tamás Borovics, Dávid Hajmási, Gusztáv Dietz, Nóra Trokán and Zsombor Ertl got roles in the film.
The Kabul operation is produced by Tamás Lajos, screenwriter by Áron Horváth, cinematographer by Tamás Dobos, editor by Béla Barsi and Júlia Hack. The production of the film was supported by the National Film Institute. The action film is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2025.
