The secretary general of the association representing telecommunications operators (Apritel) has revealed that communications networks have suffered residual damage in recent days during the fires that are ravaging the country. According to Pedro Mota Soares, this situation can be explained by the redundancy of the networks.
“The truth is that we have, in the overwhelming majority of all municipalities in the country, three networks”, began by explaining the person in charge, referring to Meo, Nos and Vodafone.
“Many people criticized the idea of having some redundancy in the networks. But the truth is that this redundancy also gives us security and resilience, especially in times like these,” he said in an interview with Negócios/Antena1.
Pedro Mota Soares took the opportunity, however, to point out that there are still pending issues related to disasters that need to be resolved. “There are issues that have been identified for some time and that have not yet been resolved.” He gave an example: the sector’s lack of priority in energy resupply.
“When a catastrophe occurs in a given territory, as is happening at the moment, It was very important that thecommunications operators were considered a priority to receive electricityso that they can, obviously, return to operating under normal conditions”, he explained. For this to happen, “there needs to be dialogue between the sector regulators: ERSE and Anacom”, he added.
