Although the price of electricity on the stock market has been extremely high in recent months, and Serbia has also been importing electricity, it was expected that this would spill over into household accounts. But, “there is no question of raising the price of electricity for citizens this year”, says Dubravka Đedović Handanović, Minister of Mining and Energy, in an interview with “Politika”.

As she pointed out, “despite high price fluctuations in June and July when there was a heat wave, electricity prices in the European Union have stabilized, while in recent days we have a stabilization trend in the region as well.” Electricity is a stock market commodity, there are various influences on the price movement, as was the case with the negative price of electricity in April. In any case, there is no question of an increase in the price of electricity for citizens this year. As for the economy, we expect that the new methodology for calculating the price of electricity and gas will be in force even before November 1. This will give us a mechanism that will enable EPS and “Srbijagas” to respond to price movements on the market in a faster and more flexible way.”

The minister said that in the past few weeks, we were faced with an unprecedentedly long heat wave and record consumption of electricity, all at the time of major overhauls of thermal, hydro and mining systems. It is clear that part of the energy had to be provided on the market, but that electricity was not bought at crash prices, nor was it imported more than in December 2021. Quite the opposite, since overhaul activities are planned, import is also planned, and under the most favorable conditions.

The record consumption required additional amounts of energy, which were also provided at the most favorable market conditions.
