Nokia, the legendary phone manufacturer that made history with many iconic models, experienced the peak of its fame a few years ago. However, with the advent of smartphones, the brand failed to keep up with the competition. Today, the license to manufacture smartphones is owned by HMD Global, which has now announced the end of their production.
Mobile phones from Nokia are ending
Between 1998 and 2011, Nokia was the largest phone manufacturer on the market. However, with the advent of the Android and iOS operating systems, Nokia’s train started to run away. HMD tried to restart the legendary brand, which took the Finnish brand under its wing in 2017 and released, for example, the excellent Nokia 6 model.
Over the next few years, HMD tried to revive Nokia with, for example, the Nokia 9 PureViews model with nine cameras. However, the phone was not a success, which no model has been able to do in the entire 8 years under HMD’s management. HMD has therefore decided to end production and is now focusing only on its portfolio. This is also proven by the company’s website, where you can no longer buy Nokia smartphones.
Dumb phone sales continue
However, HMD’s sales strategy only applies to smartphones. “Stupid” phones are still for sale, and Nokia-branded phones should continue to be released in the future. For many customers, Nokia is still synonymous with reliability and durability, which Nokia push-button phones still fulfill today. And smartphones from HMD are not to be thrown away either, in the editorial office we tested Skyline, for example.
What will happen to Nokia?
Although Nokia is leaving the smartphone market for good, this does not mean the end of the company itself. In the past, although Nokia primarily focused on phones, it did not forget about other industries either. Today it is a stable company in the field of network infrastructure and telecommunications space. Nokia is also among the leaders with 5G or IoT (Internet of Things) technology.
