“There was talk of a lack of coordination”

A 20 year old man tried to assassinate Donald Trump during a meeting in Pennsylvania. Antonio Pelaez He is a journalist, he was present at that rally and he gives us his testimony live on ‘Code 10’: he says that at first he thought that what he heard were firecrackers, but then he perceived the chaos and says that there was talk from the beginning of a failure of coordination between the different police forces.

It all happened in the middle of his speech, shots interrupted his words, Trump put his right hand to his ear and crouched down in an intuitive gesture.

A bullet had grazed him and the rest of the people in the stands tried to get to safety while the secret service rushed to cover Trump and get him off the stage. Chaos took over everyone present, for a few seconds we saw the blood running down Trump’s face who, despite what had just happened, was addressing the audience with his fist raised.

After being surrounded, he was led to the armored van and the FBI identified the shooter. He had no criminal record, was registered as a Republican voter and was shot dead shortly after he fired.

Antonio Peláez is a journalist and was at the scene. He tells us that “a priori” there was no fear or chaos because the atmosphere was one of “celebration”, as is often the case at this type of event: “In many cases it is family-oriented, they go with their grandparents and grandchildren… There were many stalls in the outdoor area, more than 50 selling T-shirts or jewellery about Donald Trump, food and so on.”

In the inner perimeter there was “security” and from what has been published it was reinforced by another supposed threat: “I had the feeling that more or less the procedure was the same but “was supposed to be reinforced.”

“When the shots started to ring out, we who were outside had just finished interviewing a partisan activist who had left the premises and said that it was full,” Antonio recounted, adding that his first impression was that it was “firecrackers” or “fireworks”.

However, chaos soon ensued: “People started running out, scared, and from then on, everyone started commenting on what had happened.”
