There will be a big change, according to Mark Zuckerberg, on Facebook and Meta’s other platforms –

It reduces fact-checking and leaves it to the community to weed out fake news and false information.

The results of the presidential election held in the United States in November caused significant waves among the tech billionaires, who previously tended to gravitate towards the Democrats, from Jeff Bezos to Tim Cook to Mark Zuckerberg, who are trying to make spectacular gestures to Donald Trump, who is preparing for his second term. The head of Meta Platforms was not satisfied with donating one million dollars to the inauguration fund of the future president, but he is re-setting the content control guidelines of the social sites operated by his company.

For Facebook, Instagram and Threads, this means loosening the rules and ending the fact-checking program. Until now, Meta has outsourced this activity to external actors, including the AFP news agency. According to the plans, a community-based system would take its place.

We also see something like this on Elon Musk’s X, but the effectiveness of Community Notes is questionable, because someone drawing attention to the misleading or harmful nature of a given content is not the same as removing it, it remains available and freely distributed. In any case, Zuckerberg tried to exaggerate it in his video shared on Facebook positive aspects of change.

“It’s time to get back to our roots in free speech. We’re replacing fact-checkers with community notes, simplifying our policies, and focusing on reducing errors. We’re looking forward to this next chapter.”

The new regulation will first take effect in the United States.
