For many fans of BMW and this model in particular, that would be a problem, but it makes sense that, if the future BMW 3 Series is going to be 100% electric, its sports variant will also be. What is clear is that there will be a seventh generation of the BMW M3 and it seems that BMW is not going to want to get its fingers caught with this model.
To not disappoint anyone and make everyone happy, the next BMW M3 will have a 100% electric version and a gasoline version with a turbocharged inline six-cylinder block. And the name will be the same for the gasoline alternative and for the electric version: “Do we need to differentiate them? An M3 is a promise, not an engine,” said van Meel.
Another thing that the CEO of BMW M has recognized is that the electric M3 it will be heavier than gasoline, at least until solid-state batteries arrive that allow long ranges to be obtained with less weight because, today, it ensures that customers want autonomy and the only solution to have it is large and heavy batteries.
“Initially, the cars will be heavy because they will be equipped with batteries that allow a long range to avoid range anxiety in environments where charging infrastructure is not yet widespread.” In any case, van Meel says that BMW M’s priority in the medium term is to ensure that its cars are as agile and dynamically attractive as they have always been, despite the weight.
“I have driven our cars and I know what we are doing, and they are really great, but either I don’t want to say now what we are doing, or I can’t convey the message,” said the manager, sending a message of reassurance to the fans of BMW’s M division.
