Every year in September, Apple presents new iPhones. This year it is already the turn of the sixteenth series. Apple focuses mainly on AI, with which you can perfect your photos, create images based on a short text or rewrite and summarize texts. That sounds familiar!
The entry-level iPhone 16 is 6.1 inches. The iPhone 16 Plus has the same features as the regular iPhone 16, but is a size larger at 6.7 inches. For extensive features, such as an extra telephoto lens that lets you zoom in optically up to five times, there is the iPhone 16 Pro at 6.3 inches and the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max at 6.9 inches.

Alternative to iPhone 16: Samsung Galaxy S24
Like the iPhone 16, the Samsung Galaxy S24 is fairly compact. This Android alternative has a 6.2-inch display. In terms of cameras, you get a better deal with the Samsung Galaxy S24. In addition to the main camera and wide-angle lens, the S24 also gets you a telephoto lens that can zoom in optically up to three times. The iPhone 16 lacks a camera to zoom in properly. Both phones can edit photos using artificial intelligence. On the S24, this is called Galaxy AI and Apple calls it Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence brings many more useful features, such as searching your photos for a specific image or summarizing emails, but it will only be available in the Netherlands next year. Galaxy AI is already directly accessible after your purchase.
The iPhone 16 is available from 969 euros. The Samsung S24 is now available as a separate device for 629 euros at Bol. The cheapest option is to take out a subscription right away. Choose Odido at GSMweb and you pay 384 euro.
iPhone 16 Plus Alternative: OnePlus 12 or Motorola Edge 50 Ultra
The iPhone 16 Plus is the one to get if you don’t need the best of Apple, but do like a larger screen. This display has the same functions as the regular iPhone 16, but has a size of 6.7 inches. In this area, the OnePlus 12 and Motorola Edge 50 Ultra are more or less the same: they have a display of 6.8 and 6.7 inches.
Moreover, these are nice devices if you don’t need the best of the best. They run on a smooth chip and have a good camera set, including a periscope lens. In the iPhone 16 series, this is only reserved for the Pro devices. On both Android phones, you use AI.
The iPhone 16 Plus starts at 1119 euros, which is a lot lower for these Android alternatives. Right now, you can get the OnePlus 12 as a separate device for 809 euros at Phonemarket.

iPhone 16 Pro Alternative: Google Pixel 9 Pro
Advanced features in a compact package can be found with the iPhone 16 Pro, but this also sounds like another phone that came out not so long ago. The Google Pixel 9 Pro measures – just like its Apple counterpart – 6.3 inches and runs on the fast Tensor chip. This is specially optimized for AI and ensures that you can use, among other things, the fine photo editing software from Google and Circle to Search.
The iPhone 16 Pro is known for its good cameras and has a periscope lens, with which you can zoom in optically up to five times. The Google Pixel 9 Pro can do that too and even with a maximum of 48 megapixels. The 16 Pro is stuck at 12 megapixels, although of course the resolution alone does not say everything.
Apple’s showpiece has a suggested retail price of 1229 euros, but the Google Pixel 9 Pro will cost you less. You can get it at Belsimpel for 636 euro with a subscription from Odido. If you would rather not be tied to a subscription, you should go to MediaMarkt. There it will cost you 1099 euros.
iPhone 16 Pro Max Alternative: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
The best of Apple in large format is the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The display has a size of 6.9 inches, but is otherwise the same as the regular 16 Pro. If you want the best of Android, then choose the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. The latter is a larger version of the Pixel 9 Pro, which is also packed with extensive features.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra even features a 200-megapixel main camera and not one, but two telephoto lenses. One of them is a periscope lens, which lets you zoom in up to five times without loss of quality.
For 1479 euros you can get the iPhone 16 Pro Max in the house. The cheapest is the S24 Ultra with a subscription from Odido at GSMweb. Then you pay a total of 768 euro for the device.
