Samsung is busy developing its new software shell: One UI 7. Various features and innovations were leaked last week, so we’ve listed them for you here.
Samsung prepares for Android 15
Android 15 is coming soon. It’s the big software update of 2024 and it comes with a number of useful innovations, such as a private spacetheft detection and better purchase security. As usual, we expect the software to be available on Google Pixel smartphones first, with other brands following suit.
It is good to know that various manufacturers put their own skin over the software. Some do this subtly, such as Motorola and HMD, others make it completely their own, such as Nothing and Samsung. At Samsung, this skin is called One UI and with the launch of Android 15, the manufacturer also introduces the latest version: One UI 7. Various leaks show that a lot is going to change.
Design is being overhauled
Samsung’s software is incredibly recognizable, but in One UI 7 the design is still partly overhauled. This is evident from a major leak that tech website SmartPix shared. Especially the icons for Samsung apps will look more colorful. Also, buttons and bars in menus will get a more rounded shape.
Speaking of menus, the notification and quick settings menus are also getting a makeover and are being separated. It’s similar to the menus on Xiaomis and iPhones: swipe down from the top left and your notifications will appear. Swipe down from the top right and settings for Wi-Fi, brightness, and more will appear.
Dynamic Island is coming to Android
Samsung seems to be copying Apple more lately (check out their latest smartwatch and earphones). The following feature is also borrowed from the American manufacturer: the dynamic island. Apple gives this name to the dynamic pop-ups around the cutout for the selfie camera on its iPhones.
Samsung is also working on this, according to Chun Bai on X. How the feature will be implemented is still unclear. On the iPhone 14 Pro and later, timers, music and navigation will be displayed in the bubble, among other things. Live events, such as sports matches, will also be shared. The latter also works on the lock screen of the iPhones and Samsung is reportedly bringing that to One UI 7 as well. We are curious to see how much the new features resemble those of Apple.
Revamped camera app
Samsung smartphones often perform well in the camera department, especially now that AI is getting better at post-processing and lighting images. Samsung is also tackling the camera app with One UI 7. Leaked screenshots show that the manufacturer is focusing on one-handed control. Various settings are often placed at the bottom of the screen. Handy!
More One UI 7 updates to come
One UI 7 seems to have a lot more in store, such as satellite connection for sending messages without coverage. When exactly the Android 15 update with One UI 7 will be released, is unknown. Samsung will start the beta program in the coming weeks, but that is not immediately available in the Netherlands.
