Dyson, known for its vacuum cleaners, air purifiers and lamps, made a strange start on the audio market two years ago with a pair of headphones with a face mask. The second attempt is more like that: OnTrac, a high-quality headphone with a unique design and attractive features.
Dyson’s first headphones, the Zone with built-in air purification, are impressive but above all rather strange. They actually came just too late, when the corona period was just over and everyone wanted to forget about face masks. And all the emphasis was on that face mask, which almost made you forget that the headphones themselves were quite impressive. That calls for a second attempt, and now it’s here.
The Dyson OnTrac is a headphone, just for your ears. And all the lessons Dyson learned with the Zone are in there. Because the active noise cancellation of the Zone was great – and it had to be, because there was a motor in the headphone for air purification.
For the OnTrac, Dyson promises 384,000 changes per second in active noise cancellation: that’s how often the eight built-in microphones listen for noise around you, and the headphones make the opposite sound to mask it. Dyson promises at least 40 decibels of noise cancellation.
55 hour battery life
Typically, active noise cancellation takes a toll on battery life, but Dyson promises the OnTrac will last 55 hours with the feature enabled. That’s above average, as Sony’s popular WH-1000XM5 and Sonos Ace only last 30 hours, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 24 hours and the AirPods Max 20 hours. Dyson achieves this battery life by placing the battery in the headband, which should also make for better weight distribution and greater comfort.
The Dyson headphones feature 40mm, 16ohm neodymium speaker drivers and advanced audio signal processing. According to Dyson, the headphones reproduce frequencies from 6 Hertz to 21,000 Hertz, creating “deep sub-bass you can feel, and clear highs at the top end of the frequency range.” The speaker housing is angled at 13 degrees towards the ear, something that also works well with headphones from Bowers & Wilkins, among others.
Fully customizable appearance
And then the most striking part of the Dyson OnTrac: the adaptability of the headphones. They come in four standard colours, made from high-quality, durable materials. The outer shells are made of aluminium, but the look can be customised with custom-made ear cushions and outer shells.
For example, you have copper outer covers, or with a painted finish that Dyson says gives a ceramic feel. There are ear cushions in black, yellow, green and orange. Initially, four colourways will be available: CNC Aluminium, CNC Copper, Ceramic Mandarin and CNC Black Nickel. Separate sets to adjust the appearance will soon cost 49 euros each, and according to Dyson there will soon be 2000 different colour combinations possible.
The Dyson OnTrac will be available from the beginning of August and will cost 499 euros.
