Google officially released Android 15 today. Pixel phone users can expect the big update in a few weeks. Later this fall, smartphones from other brands, such as Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, Nothing and OnePlus, will be next.
After months of testing, Google has announced the release of Android 15 released tonight for developers. The company has made the source code available via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Support for Google Pixel phones will follow in the coming weeks. Although major changes are not immediately visible, Android 15 does bring some interesting innovations.
One-tap login
For example, Android is introducing a feature that lets you log in to websites and apps with a single tap, without a password. It will also be possible to restrict access to certain apps, which could be useful for parents who want to regulate their children’s phone use.
Smart screen reader
Another one striking addition is the integration of artificial intelligence into TalkBack, Android’s screen reader. This feature can describe images, which is especially useful for visually impaired users.
In addition, the ‘Circle to Search’ search function will get a music recognition option, similar to the Shazam app. This allows you to easily identify songs that you hear around you.
Earthquakes
Google is also expanding its earthquake warning system. Previously only available in a few US states, it is now being rolled out across the country and six overseas territories. The system uses the motion sensors in Android phones to detect vibrations and warn users of potential earthquakes. It is not known when this feature will come to the Netherlands.
Read-aloud function in Chrome
Finally, Android developers will soon be able to enjoy improved read-aloud functionality in the Chrome browser, and offline maps are coming to Wear OS 5, the operating system for smartwatches.
