Sometimes we say to ourselves that the most beautiful shots only exist in films. They are romantic, fantasized, but we know that they are out of our reach, from our world. However, the story of Angelo Massagli and Caitlin Hale could push a director to make their experiences into a romantic comedy.
At the age of 10, both children auditioned for the film Rock Academydirected by Richard Linklater, with Jack Black in the lead. Angelo, present at Caitlin’s hearing, remembers saying to himself “Wow, this girl really has something special!” He didn’t think he was saying that well. The New York Times tells their love story.
After being auditioned and selected for the film, the two young actors spent several months filming together in New York. On set, they become friends, and their mothers, who are often present, also develop a friendly relationship. As children, Caitlin Hale and Angelo Massagli did not feel any particular attraction to each other, the couple confides today. But after the film came out, they stayed in touch through a chat group.
A few years later, our two future lovers decided to leave the world of cinema to pursue careers far from the spotlight. Caitlin earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations from Arizona State University, while Angelo earned a degree in English from Northeastern University (Boston, Massachusetts). By happy coincidence, their paths crossed again in 2018, in Florida. Angelo was then a law student at the University of Miami, while Caitlin completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Nova Southeastern University (Fort Lauderdale, Florida).
Today, Angelo works as a lawyer for the TikTok platform (and they’re going to need that in these times), while Caitlin works as a sonographer.
It’s not romance, it’s “Friends” in real life
Aware of their proximity, they decide to eat at the restaurant, even sending a selfie to their respective mothers. After this meeting, they continue to share moments together, and begin to say to each other “I don’t know what, but there’s something going on between us…”
This proximity, which they maintain thanks to the relationship they developed as children, allows them to share real quality moments. Caitlin remembers one dinner, where after a trip to the bathroom, Angelo ordered coconut cake, something she had mentioned on their previous date. Obviously, Caitlin was touched by this attentive ear.
“Even though it wasn’t romantic, that familiarity we had helped overcome some relationship obstacles.” Well, not romantic, we will legitimately allow ourselves to doubt it. The coconut dessert kick… Yes, yes, and what’s next? A ring accidentally placed at the bottom of a glass of champagne? Ah, damn romance.
When Angelo first told Caitlin that he had feelings for her, he did so with, shall we say…typically masculine tact (not that we should generalize, but there are many similar examples). “I think I have feelings for you” he declared. Caitlin, reassured by this statement, replied with an exasperated air: “Ah, you think so?!” A few weeks later, she moved in with him.
After getting engaged in May 2023 at the MoMA in New York (really not romantic, again), they decided to get married in a castle in New Jersey, where the entire troupe of Rock Academy was invited.
As of January 4, 2025, Caitlin Hale and Angelo Massagli are officially married. So, when in doubt, if you are still in love with your best friend from college, don’t hesitate to send him a little message on Instagram (but at your own risk, you alone will take responsibility).
