Thessaloniki: A construction chimney broke and fell on table seats in the center due to strong winds

Miraculously, there were no injuries shortly after midnight on Monday (30/09) in the center of Thessaloniki, when a chimney from a building detached due to strong winds, and fell on table seats.

According to a post by the Deputy Mayor of Cleanliness, Giorgos Dimarelos, the incident occurred at the junction of Chrysostomou Smyrnis and Proxenos Koromilas streets and the Authorities were immediately mobilized to remove the dangerous chimney.

As Mr. Dimarelos’ post states, “the road was blocked and without having to get involved in bureaucratic procedures, the hotel offered at its own expense to restore safety for everyone in the area by financing the removal of the dangerous fireplace.”

The post of the Deputy Mayor of Cleanliness of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Giorgos Dimarelos

“Because good things must be said, I want to share what happened yesterday and today in Chrysostomou Smyrna, which few people took notice of because of the lightning reaction of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Fire Department, but mainly because of the management of the Daios hotel.

Yesterday, around 00:30, a deafening bang was heard from the corner apartment building at the junction of Chrysostomou Smyrni and Proxenos Koromilas streets. Due to the strong winds, the chimney that served the… Snoopy for those who remember, and which was still standing on the roof of the building, fell and stopped as seen in the photos. But first a piece of the chimney came off and luckily as they were sitting in the restaurant below, it fell on the umbrellas and luckily we had no casualties.

Immediately, the Fire Brigade came and I, on behalf of the Municipality, as the political head of Civil Protection, and early in the morning the relevant services of the Municipality. The road was blocked and without having to get involved in bureaucratic procedures the hotel offered at its own expense to restore safety for everyone in the area by financing the removal of the dangerous fireplace.

I want to sincerely thank the hotel management because they took on the significant costs of a job, as they did not have to. How much better our city would be if we all did much smaller things, as we should.”
