The ongoing floods in the south of the country and the ongoing fight against the elements are unfortunately not the only problems for residents of the threatened areas. Recently, we informed you about, among others, telephone scam for flood victims or even false RCB Alerts. Now another problem has arisen.
It’s about inflating prices, for example, for basic necessities in flood regions. It turns out that some people have sensed an opportunity for additional earnings in the natural disaster – and quite a lot of them. Some Facebook groups have started to display ads for the sale of bottled water for as much as PLN 10 per bottle. That’s not all, because some entrepreneurs are also taking advantage of the opportunity to increase their profits.
He informed about the case Office of Competition and Consumer Protection and the Trade Inspection. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection announced that it would begin control activities aimed at preventing unfair practices in areas where residents are fighting the elements.
The situation is to be monitored, and unannounced inspections of companies will also occur. All this in order to eliminate cases of exploiting a dominant position on the market or simply the occurrence of unfair practices aimed at achieving much higher profits due to a natural disaster.
Any irregularities or suspicious price changes may be reported to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protectionand the office will investigate whether any violation has occurred. If it is found that the company is actually taking advantage of the position and excessively increasing the prices of basic products, a penalty will be imposed.
And this can be very high, because according to the regulations, it will amount to up to 10% of the annual turnover of a given company.
