Hundreds of people demanded the resignation of the prime minister and the president of Valencia in Spain on Saturday. After last week’s demonstration, citizens gathered again in downtown Valencia to urge Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the head of the autonomous community, Carlos Mazón, to take responsibility. People mainly blame them for the deaths of more than two hundred people due to the floods that followed the October 29 downpours.
Demonstrators’ banners carried slogans such as “Mazón and Sánchez resign” or “Sánchez, rest in peace”. In their speech, the organizers demanded justice and help for the flood victims in addition to disclaiming responsibility. Unlike what happened last week, this movement ended peacefully without incident.
Meanwhile, search teams in Valencia found another body on Saturday in a deserted part of the settlement called Sedaví.
Together with him, the number of victims of the sentencing period rose to 226, almost all of whom – 218 – died in the Valencia region.
However, this data is still not final, as at least thirteen people are still listed as missing, and the search for them will continue on Sunday, as well as the cleaning work.
Although almost three weeks have passed since the flood, the authorities and volunteers still do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. There are parts of the region where there are still heaps of car wrecks and silt that the sea washes ashore hundreds of kilometers away, for example in neighboring Murcia, so the municipalities there are also constantly cleaning the beach sections full of logs, plants and waste.
On Saturday, it was also revealed that on the day of the disaster, the possibility of the Forata Dam in Valencia collapsing due to heavy rains was already discussed at one of the emergency meetings at half past six in the afternoon, but the warning issued in this connection only reached its destination around quarter past eight. Since other communication lapses have already been suggested, it is almost certain that human errors contributed to the fact that so many people lost their lives in the floods caused by the time of judgment.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Sunday that on November 27, he will report on the government’s measures in connection with the weather and floods at the plenary session of the parliament that day. It plans to explain in detail what happened before, during and after the natural disaster, as well as whether someone will take responsibility for the lost lives and the incalculable damage.
Sánchez scheduled his report for the end of the month because before that he will travel to Brazil to participate in the G20 summit.
