Released in 2004, Samurai Champloo is the cult anime for a whole generation of Japanese animation fans. Today, its creator Shin’ichiro Watanabe made a completely crazy revelation.
Vive le Shinichirō Watanabe Cinematic Universe
Without a doubt, the anime Samuraï Champloo had a profound impact on fans of Japanese animation. Many viewers, famous or anonymous, continue to cite it among their favorite anime. We are thinking in particular of Guillaume Jamar from the Ichiban Japan channel, who never misses an opportunity to talk about it. Blending chambara – the Japanese swordplay genre – and hip-hop, the series tells the story of a trio searching for a samurai who smells of sunflowers in Edo-era Japan. This masterpiece has definitively established its author, the director Shin’ichirō Watanabe – already praised for Cowboy Bebop -, among the greatest Japanese artists of his time.
While his new anime co-produced by the MAPPA studio and Adult Swim crystallizes all expectations, the Japanese director lent himself to the game of confidences, during an interview granted to Anime News Network. He explains in particular that all his series – Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Terror in Resonance, Carole & Tuesday – are part of the same narrative universe. “I always thought that my works were part of the same universe.”, he declares bluntly. And the same goes for Lazarushis next anime.
As a reminder, Lazarus will plunge us into a falsely utopian future where diseases have disappeared from the face of the earththanks to a revolutionary vaccine developed by a brilliant doctor. But when the latter reveals the pot aux roses, namely that according to his plans, everyone who took the vaccine will die in the near futurea highly trained squad sets out in pursuit to capture him and save humanity.
Obviously, like all of Shin’ichirō Watanabe’s achievements, Lazarus is a small event in itself. But in addition, this is the first collaboration between the director and Hollywoodsince in addition to being produced by Warner Bros. Discovery (owner of Adult Swim), the series benefited from the work of sound designers who worked on Game of Thrones et Duneas well as the participation of director-stuntman-choreographer Chad Stahelski (John Wick), who directed the action scenes of Lazarus to ensure an exceptional show.
Anyway, know that Lazarus takes place in the same fictional universe as Samurai Champloo et Cowboy Bebop should certainly bring light to this very promising new animated series. We can’t wait to discover it!
