This affordable competitor to the Tesla Model Y is a sales hit

The Onvo L60, NIO’s new electric SUV, has already been delivered more than 20,000 times in the first hundred days. The Chinese company sees demand for the relatively affordable electric car rising sharply in the coming months. NIO also wants to launch the electric car in Europe soon.

With the affordable electric SUV Onvo L60, NIO seems to be one in its own country to have a sales hit. More than 20,000 copies were delivered in just 100 days. NIO launched its sub-brand Onvo in September. The L60 is the first model and it immediately got off to a flying start.

NIO says it is on schedule to deliver another 10,000 units of the L60 in December. That number should have doubled to 20,000 by March 2025, so the pace is good.

Cheaper than Tesla Model Y

With a starting price of 21,000 dollars, the Onvo L60 is a competitor for the Tesla Model Y, which is much more expensive. The Model Y is available in China from $35,000, a big difference. Onvo’s electric SUV is 4.8 meters long, 1.93 meters wide and 1.6 meters high, which is comparable to the Tesla Model Y.

The price of $21,000 is for the battery rental model, which costs $85 or $125 monthly depending on the size of the battery. With the battery included, the L60 costs about $29,000, still considerably cheaper than the Tesla.

Also to Europe

NOI will also launch the Onvo L60 in Europe in early 2025, but according to sources from Automotive News For now, this will only happen in the United Kingdom. Unlike the European Union, the UK does not impose additional import tariffs on Chinese EVs. In the EU, NIO and Onvo face an import tariff of 31 percent.

The company does have plans to also launch the Onvo brand in the EU, CEO Qin Lihong told the Chinese CGTN. According to Lihong, NIO wants to expand to 25 different drawers next year. The export of the L60s could start after the spring. A German YouTuber already published this week a review of the Onvo L60.

Battery changes

NIO also sells several electric cars in our country. The company stands out among all Chinese EV brands with its battery swapping stations, which allow you to quickly exchange an empty battery for a full one. Since this month, NIO also offers a service in the Netherlands that allows you to temporarily choose a larger battery.
