Nvidia has presented a new AI tool, Fugatto, that can create sounds you’ve never heard before. For example, you can make a guitar meow or a trumpet hiss like a snake.
Fugatto is designed as a versatile “Swiss army knife” for audio, Nvidia said in a blogpost. This technology allows users to edit or generate sounds via text commands. A demonstration video shows how the program, for example, transforms the sound of a train into a string orchestra.
Unheard of
It is also possible to create music fragments based on text prompts. You can also remove instruments from songs, change them to another instrument or add instruments. It is even possible to adjust the accent of a recorded voice, or its emotional tone.
The development of the technology took more than a year. The model was trained with millions of audio samples to generate complex and unique audio.
Done with your job?
But although the technology is innovative, it also raises questions. Creative industries are already very concerned about the impact of AI on jobs. For example, just a few days ago it was announced that IMAX will use AI to translate films. It is not known how many jobs will be lost.
Still, some see AI as a natural evolution in music. “The history of music is also a history of technology. The electric guitar gave the world rock and roll. When the sampler appeared, hip-hop was born,” said musician Ido Zmishlany in an Nvidia blog post. “With AI we are writing the next chapter of music. We have a new instrument, a new tool to make music.”
