As we saw with this character who should have ended up on the Iron Throne or the sordid fate of Sansa Starkseveral destinies were to be very different according to George RR Martin’s original plans. But there is one character whose death should have been even more terrible.
A terrible fate, even in the universe of Westeros
There is no shortage of shocking deaths in George RR Martin’s fantasy universe. Indeed, between the decapitation of Ned Stark, the death of Jon Snow (then his resurrection), the explosion of Oberyn Martell’s skull, the poisoning of Joffrey Baratheon and without forgetting the famous Red Wedding, the deaths that forever marked fans of the series Game of Thrones and the literary work from which it is taken are so numerous that one would almost wonder if the public does not like to see their favorite characters die before their eyes. However, there is one particularly shocking death during the Red Wedding that should have been even more shocking in George RR Martin’s original plans.
When we see Catelyn Stark being killed in the penultimate episode of season 3 of the series, just after she saw her son murdered in front of her eyes, the shock is total ; and if in the literary work, the Queen of the North returns from the dead under the name of Lady Stoneheart after being resurrected by Lord BĂ©ric Dondarrion, the fate she should have had in the original plans of the creator of Westeros is completely different. The Red Wedding was not originally planned and Catelyn Stark should have accompanied her children beyond the Wall during their escape from Winterfell to the north. It was therefore during this journey that Lady Stark was killed by a White Walker and therefore became one of them.
An atrocious end for Catelyn Stark which makes us put into perspective what happens to her in the end in the series or in the novelsalthough getting killed during your own son’s wedding is bad enough as it is.
