More than two years after the arrival of ChatGPT, AI assistants are everywhere. But the American company Omi now wants to go one step further. Omi’s wearable device offers an AI assistant that could read your thoughts.
The basic function of the Omi works with a permanent sound recording of the environment. Unlike existing voice assistants, no special command is required to activate the system. The artificial intelligence in the device can summarize conversations, generate action items and answer questions. The company states that the battery lasts three days.
Recognizing brain signals
An experimental feature uses an electrode attached to the temple. This can pick up certain brain signals to recognize when a user is communicating directly with the system. The technology for this is still in its infancy. Currently, only one type of brain signal can be recognized.
The system is open-source, which means other developers can create applications for it. There are already 250 apps available, including links to services such as Google Drive. The AI is powered by technology from OpenAI and Meta.
For $89
The first 5,000 copies are already in use by test users. The device will be launched in the second quarter of this year and will cost $89.
The developers see it as a platform that can be further expanded in the future, possibly even with more advanced capabilities for reading brain activity.
Digital version of yourself
Omi founder Nik Shevchenko developed the system based on his desire to create a digital mentor. A special feature allows users to create a digital version of famous personalities based on their social media posts.
Wait and see
It remains to be seen whether these cheap AI devices can deliver on the promises in practice. For example, Humane’s new AI gadgets Rabbit R1 and AI Pin received a lot of attention last year, but both devices flopped.
