This Dutch bike computer is the ‘smartest in the world’

Dutch startup Absolute Cycling has launched its bike computer The One. The gadget is supposed to show ‘real performance data’, thanks to more sensors and new AI-driven algorithms.

The One has a 3.1 inch color screen with 800 x 480 pixels, 300 PPI and an anti-reflective coating. It is not a touchscreen, because the startup wants to keep the operation as simple as possible. The control is therefore via three buttons. Things like route planning, trip analysis and screen settings have to be done via an app.

Sensors

The bike computer continuously monitors data from the built-in sensors and that leads to ‘reliable on-screen measurements and accurate ride files’, according to the Arnhem company. The data is said to be more accurate than competitors, because more datasets are used.

In recent years, Absolute Cycling has devoted a great deal of attention to developing smart algorithms to further improve measurements. The One determines your location within 2 meters, even without a satellite connection. The algorithms also calculate the angle of inclination to a fraction of a degree. The software also ensures reliable navigation in places with little or no GPS signal, such as tunnels and dense forests. The One uses GPS, Galileo, Glonass, a barometer, an inclination sensor, a motion sensor, gyroscope and a digital compass.

Simplicity

The bike computer is designed to be as simple as possible to operate, and Absolute Cycling has opted for a minimalist approach. Functions such as rerouting, pausing and starting are performed automatically, without you having to confirm them.

The interface has three main screens: navigation, training and data. The maps are designed to be easy to read, with contrasting colours and very clear navigation instructions. “By removing all distractions, what remains is what cycling is all about: pure outdoor fun,” says founder Harm Giesen.

Strava

The One weighs 116 grams and is waterproof with the IP56 rating, so it can withstand rain. The battery life is between 12 and 15 hours. The gadget syncs automatically via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. There is also an integration with the apps of Strava and TrainingPeaks.

The One is available for 599 euros.
