An electric bicycle usually costs a few thousand euros. You may not want to spend that much, especially for an electric folding bike that you only cycle small distances on. The German electronics brand Grundig has therefore created an e-bike that you can now buy for a remarkably affordable price.
Everyone can then also know that it is a Grundig bicycle, because that is written large on the frame. The frame also contains a 252 Wh battery with a maximum range of 50 km. The battery can be removed if you remove the Thorough E20 folds.
Seven gears
Furthermore, the folding bike has seven gears and disc brakes. Unfortunately, the gears work with a derailleur that requires more maintenance than hub gears and the disc brakes are mechanical instead of hydraulic.
To make the e-bike as small as possible, the frame can be folded in half and the handlebars can be folded down. The pedals can also be folded if the bicycle needs to be as narrow as possible.
Although the e-bike is intended to be easy to store and carry, it is not an exceptionally light bicycle. At 20 kg it is still not heavy compared to other electric bicycles, but the larger Tenways CGO 600, for example, only weighs 16 kg.
Less natural support
The Grundig E20 provides pedal assistance with a 250W motor with 30 Nm of torque. A major disadvantage of the e-bike is that it lacks a force sensor. As a result, the e-bike will probably provide a lot less natural support.
The rotation sensor sees that you are pedaling because the pedals rotate and then starts to provide support. Depending on which of the six assistance modes you choose, you then accelerate slowly or quickly to the limit of 25 km/h.
Temporarily very cheap
The electric folding bicycle can also be ordered in the Netherlands, but there are no Dutch dealers yet. If there is something wrong with the bicycle that the local bicycle repair shop cannot solve, you will probably have to take it to Germany or send it to Germany.
The E20 is currently for sale via the Grundig website for a price of only 774 euros. This is a pre-order, so your order will not be shipped until mid-December. After the pre-order, the price increases: on the Grundig site you can read that the bicycle normally costs almost double.
