XPeng began selling the M03, the first car in its lower-priced MONA line, in August. The car is reportedly selling like hot cakes now, and XPeng is struggling to keep up with demand.
The XPeng MONA M03 has been on sale in China since August, but was already a success in pre-orders with tens of thousands of reservations in the first few days. Now XPeng is asking its suppliers to keep up with the high demand, reports Electrek based on the Chinese 21 Jinji. In the first two minutes the car was ordered 10,000 times, within the first 48 hours 30,000 units were pre-ordered.
That interest continues, XPeng tells its suppliers. On average, the car is ordered 2,000 times a day. Within two weeks, the MONA M03 would have been ordered somewhere between 54,000 and 60,000 times. The biggest challenge now would be to deliver the cars on time, because an increasing waiting time will certainly cause a decrease in popularity.
A lot for little
The success is easy to explain. The XPeng MONA M03 wants to offer more for little money than the Tesla Model 3. The starting price in China is 119,800 renminbi, which is more than 15,000 euros. Now, car prices in China are a lot lower than here in Europe, but even there the Model 3 is still more expensive than the MO3: 245,900 renminbi, or more than 31,000 euros.
In China, the XPeng MONA M03 costs half of a Model 3, which would amount to more than 21,000 euros here. Although Dutch prices and availability of the XPeng are not yet known, you should not expect such a sharp price. For that money you get a slightly smaller model from China here. The XPeng MONA M03 is a fraction longer than the Model 3 with a length of 4.78 meters, and offers at least 190 hp. The car also has a beautiful, strikingly smooth design that should contribute to the aerodynamics and thus the fuel efficiency of the car. According to XPeng, the M03 is even the electric sedan with the world’s lowest air resistance.
