It is also hard to ignore their equipment, because are armed with a 76.2 mm gun in the bow, reinforced by two 30 mm AK-630M CIWS air defence systems and a Kalibr family cruise missile launcher system. Some sources even suggest that they could be equipped with Kh-35 Uran anti-ship missiles.
The Kh-35 Uran is an equivalent of the American Harpoon missile, which was designed as naval armament. Work on it began back in 1978 in response to Western systems that were similar in effectiveness to Russian ones, despite being much smaller, and were also unified with aircraft missiles, which allowed them to be deployed on many different units.
The initial design was presented in 1984, and in 1992 the homing head was refined, but further work was hampered by the suspension of funding resulting from Russia’s economic problems after the collapse of the USSR. In subsequent years, with the support of India, the project was completed, and In 2004, Uranus was adopted by the Russian army.
Kh-35 missiles are used by, among others, Project 1241.8 corvettes, Delhi-class destroyers and Project 1154 frigates, while the aviation version is carried by most of the Russian tactical aircraft, as well as Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft and Ka-52 helicopters. It is characterized by a classic aerodynamic layout, is powered by a turbojet engine and uses a combined guidance system – in the initial phase of flight an inertial navigation system is used, in the final phase active radar guidance.
