As the main course of the Keynote, Apple left the last product to show to the world iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The first Pro iPhones developed for Apple Intelligence. A facelift to last year’s Pro versions that has enough new features to be able to make the jump even from the last (now penultimate) generation. Both inside and out. This is everything Apple has brought (beyond the Apple Intelligence features) to its flagship. This is the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
A design that we know, with important new features
Let’s start with the most obvious, the design. With a continuous line, Apple has introduced a new color to the Pro range, Dessert Titanium (Desert Titanium) which, as its name suggests, has a golden, sandy and metallic tone at the same time, taking up the “gold” range of previous models. Additionally, Apple has kept the other three shades from last year: Titanium Black, White and Natural (which looks slightly different from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. At least in photos.) Of course, the titanium used now is grade 5, which makes it even more resistant.
The screen is now larger on both models. While on The Pro goes from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, in the Pro Max model it goes from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. Besides, Apple has significantly reduced the bezelsmaking it Apple’s bezel-less product to date. The screen really looks spectacular, giving the impression that it’s floating in front of us as if there were no bezels.
Finally, and as the biggest novelty in the visible hardware part, Apple has introduced “Camera Control” (I’ll refer to it as the Capture Button on occasion.) A new haptic button placed on the right side of the iPhone that allows us to will allow you to launch and manage the camera and its modes like never before. In addition, it will help us get much more out of Apple Intelligence, as it will allow us to wake up the camera immediately, point at something and have Apple Intelligence tell us what it is, information about it or where to buy something similar (among many others).
Cameras take another (big) leap
If we talk about the cameras, an increasingly important aspect in the iPhone Pro and the one that differentiates them the most from the entry-level models, Apple has introduced important improvements so as to have a “never seen before” camera.
In The main objective is 48 Mpx (24mm) now with Fusion Camera that allows even more light to enter with a focal aperture of f/1.78. This lens allows us to zoom up to 2x without losing quality (2x at 48mm).
Regarding the wide anglethe improvement is noticeable. Apple (finally) has introduced a 48Mpx sensor with an f/2.2 focal aperture. This way, the wide angle will work much better and the quality of the photos will improve even in low-light areas. A long-awaited change.
Finally, The 5x telephoto lens remains as we had it in the 15 Pro Max but reaching the Pro version as well, thus forgetting the 3x that it was equipped with last year.
As you can see, the changes to the camera are significant, but that’s not all. Apple has introduced 4K recording at 120 fps along with the ability to use Cinema mode in slow motion. And, as for capturing photos, they have enhanced the filters, being able to add them in real time.
The capture button or “Camera Control”
Now that we know the aesthetic changes and the new power of the cameras, we can talk and better understand the meaning of Camera Control. The new button not only opens the camera appalso allows you to take photos with another simple click, being in a more comfortable position than the volume up button that we could use for this until now.
Besides, Being a haptic button, it has greater functionality to open and capture photos. It is also sensitive to tapping, double-tapping, or swiping.
INCISO:I couldn’t help but mention how Apple, whenever it is going to introduce something new to the iPhone, first tests it on other devices. This haptic capture button, with sliding, pressing, etc., has been around for some time now on the AirPods. This is Apple’s modus operandi.
We continue. Thanks to these haptic button capabilities, we will be able to control multiple camera settings with just one finger. In principle, the capabilities are as follows:
- One press being in the iOS menu will open the camera. And once opened, we have the following possibilities.
- One press will take a photo
- Holding the button downwill record video directly
- Light pulsation It will allow us to manage the zoom (in addition to having to slide to increase or decrease it)
- Double light press will allow you to open the camera settings section (Night Mode, timers, etc.).
For all this, the button will give haptic feedback to the userthus understanding that you have pressed or are moving in some way. The capture button is camouflaged in the hardware of the device since it has the same color as it and is covered by a sapphire crystal that gives it resistance while maintaining its haptic capabilities.
Let’s talk about the PROtente interior
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will equip a innovative A18 Pro chip based on Apple Silicon. The second generation of processors with 3nm transistors that has A new Neural Engine which allows up to 35 trillion operations per second, being more efficient and increasing memory bandwidth by 17%.
The A18 Pro’s CPU has 6 cores, being The fastest CPU in a smartphone. 17% faster than the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro consuming up to 20% less that this one. It is also worth mentioning The GPU, also with 6 cores, now has 20% more performance being 2x faster than the A17 Pro in ray tracing.
This chip is the first developed with a focus on Apple Intelligence and, therefore, runs all its functionalities 15% faster than in previous models. In addition, USB-C 3 or Thunderbolt equips so file transmission is faster.
On the other hand, a very important issue for users is the battery, which has undergone an increase (which is always more than welcome) and, thanks to the improved processor performance, its autonomy will also be increased.. A double improvement that promises that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max (especially the latter) have battery life to give and take. Well done, Apple.
Finally, we must mention that the Pro models will have an improvement in performance also thanks to a novel thermal dissipation with its new cooling system. An aluminum and glass substructure that dissipates heat 20% more than the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Will we be able to use the iPhone to its full potential in the summer? I hope so.
Versions and Prices
As it seems to be customary in Cupertino, prices are maintained compared to the previous generation so we cannot have better news in this regard (reducing it was never going to happen…).
