DAB+ usage figures continue to rise. Although not to the same extent as in previous years. On average, around 37 percent of all Germans will own at least one DAB+ radio in 2024. In addition, every fourth registered car already offers digital radio reception.

Who are the DAB+ frontrunners?

The leaders in DAB+ usage are Bavaria and Central Germany. Thuringia is at the top with 40 percent. Bavaria is in second place with 39 percent, followed by Saxony with 38 percent. At the bottom are Hamburg with 25 percent and Berlin with 24 percent.

According to Audio Trends 2024, it is noteworthy that the daily dwell time is also the highest in those federal states with the highest DAB+ penetration. On average in Germany, DAB+ is used for 155 minutes every day. The leader is Saxony-Anhalt with 176 minutes, followed by Thuringia with 174 minutes and Bavaria with 172 minutes. Hamburg brings up the rear with just 118 minutes. This means that almost an hour less radio is listened to in the Hanseatic city than in Saxony-Anhalt.

How intensively is DAB+ listened to?

How intensively DAB+ and web radio are listened to in each federal state is also determined by the variety of programs on DAB+. The listeners not only seem to appreciate it when they can hear as many local packages as possible, including regional and local multiplexes, but also when they can easily get some from the neighborhood. This may also explain why DAB+ is not only the most accepted in Thuringia at 40 percent, but is also 15 percent higher than that of web radio. In Bavaria the ratio of DAB+ to web radio is 39 to 19 percent. Which is the largest distance in all of Germany. In any case, Bayern tune into DAB+ more than twice as often as web radio. The now large variety of local and regional multiplexes is also paying off in Saxony. Here the ratio between DAB+ and web radio is 38 to 21 percent. In comparison, the difference between DAB+ and web radio in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bremen is just one percent in favor of DAB+. Here the values are 28 to 27 and 27 to 26 percent.
