This is how Google Recorder records your meetings

Anyone working on a thesis or taking minutes of meetings knows the time-consuming problem of converting audio to text. No stress, because Google Recorder can do it for you.

Google Recorder makes Dutch transcriptions

In 2019, Google launched the ability to automatically transcribe voice recordings in the Recorder app. The biggest drawback: the feature worked in English, among other languages, but not in Dutch. Unfortunately, anyone who made a Dutch voice recording could not yet rely on Google for a transcription.

Google Recorder can now automatically convert Dutch recordings to text. This is useful when you conduct interviews and need to get them on paper, but also when taking minutes of meetings or putting important brainwaves on paper. In this tip you can read how to get started with the Recorder transcription.

Please note: the transcription function only works on Google Pixel smartphones. If you have another Android phone, the Recorder app does not support it yet.

  1. Update the Recorder app from the Google Play Store and open it;

    You may be greeted with a notification of the update. You can also choose whether or not to back up your recordings to the cloud. Fill in your preferences.

  2. Start a voice recording in the app by clicking on the red circle;
  3. Click on ‘Transcript’ and select the language ‘Dutch’;

    You can now start your interview, meeting or other conversation. The Recorder app also distinguishes between different speakers in the conversation.

  4. Stop the recording by clicking ‘Save’ and it will appear among your other recordings;

    Your recording and transcription have now been created.

  5. To review the transcript, open the recording and select ‘Transcript’ again.

    Here you can copy and edit the text.

Do more with your transcription

In addition to converting audio to text, you can do much more with transcription. For example, if you have a lot of audio recordings and you are looking for a specific topic that is being talked about, you just have to enter that topic in the search bar of the app. Then you will be shown all the points with that keyword.

You can also edit audio recordings from within the transcript. For example, are there sentences that you would rather not see in the final recording? Simply select them in the transcript and delete them as if they were a normal text message. These recordings will then disappear from the audio file as well.

It’s good to know that the transcription of your audio takes place directly on your Google smartphone (from Pixel 4). Sensitive recordings are therefore not processed on Google’s servers if you don’t want them to be. Do you want to share the text with someone quickly? Then you can easily let Google Gemini or ChatGPT summarize the text. Please note that your recordings are uploaded for this.
