More cooperation, better information for road users and better opportunities to move cars that are in the way. This is how the Swedish Transport Administration wants to prevent new huge traffic jams on the roads this winter.
Last winter, thousands of travelers were stuck in the cold on the E22 and E4. Now the Swedish Transport Administration presents nine different measures to prevent a repeat of the chaos.
In the “Action plan for improved winter road management”, which is now handed over to the government, it is stated, among other things, that information to travelers did not get out well enough.
– We need to find better channels to reach road users. For example, we have many drivers who do not speak Swedish and we need to reach out to them as well, says Trafikverket’s director general Roberto Maiorana at a press conference.
Move cars
They also want to move stranded cars that clog the roads faster and more decisively than was the case last winter.
– We need to continue developing legislation and permits to be able to do it in the best way possible, says Maiorana.
Strengthened preparedness is also highlighted, and a new round-the-clock function that enables the Swedish Transport Administration to respond more quickly. At the same time, cooperation with, for example, the rescue service and county administrations must improve, with a clearer distribution of responsibilities and mandates.
“Gap in cooperation”
– With this, a good and important foundation is laid for cooperation between authorities to take place significantly better and directly. One of the reasons for the very strong stop on the E22 was a gap in the cooperation, says infrastructure minister Andreas Carlson (KD).
Carlson also places much of the responsibility on individual road users.
– If the weather outlook looks very bad and difficult, you need to think, is it worth taking this trip, can I contribute to not creating or worsening situations, he says.
