On Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. a short visit to Greenland.
The visit comes after his father, the future US president, Donald Trump, has stressed for several days that he wants Greenland under US control.
Trump’s son himself has emphasized that the visit was strictly a tourist visit, but that has not stopped the story from reaching many of the world’s media.
Among others, France24, which describes how the American visit ‘has strong political overtones’.
The French media refer to King Frederik’s New Year’s speech, where he emphasized the Kingdom of Denmark’s connection and commitment ‘all the way to Greenland’.
‘Denmark’s King Frederik X has held fast to his kingdom’s rights to both Greenland and the Faroe Islands’, writes the media and also mentions the recently changed coat of arms, where both Greenland and the Faroe Islands have been given a more prominent role.
Deutsche Welle, DW, has interviewed Marc Jacobsen from the Defense Academy for their article about the visit. In front of the German media, he emphasizes that Trump’s idea of buying Greenland is no longer seen as a joke.
“I’m beginning to believe that he is more serious than we first thought”, he says to the media.
Marc Jacobsen says that the idea of an American Greenland, in addition to access to important minerals, is both about ‘Trump’s big ego’ and Greenland’s geostrategic location.
“If Russia were to send missiles against the United States, the shortest route would be over the North Pole, over Greenland,” he tells DW.
Both Greenland’s location and possible access to oil and minerals also appear again in the Australian media News’ coverage of the story.
The media quotes Ulrik Pram Gad, senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS, as having spoken to the AFP news agency.
The senior researcher says that the purpose of his son’s trip to Greenland ‘as Trump Jr himself said, is to make video content’.
According to the media, however, Ulrik Pram Gad calls the way Trump senior talks about international relations ‘worrying’.
“It could be even worse if he starts to take land”, says the senior researcher.
The visit has also received column space at The Washington Post.
Just like the French media, the American newspaper highlights both the royal New Year’s speech and how King Frederik has given Greenland a more prominent place in the coat of arms.
‘While Trump eyes Greenland, the Danish king makes it bigger on his coat of arms’, writes the media.
