You want to hand in an old tablet, but where? There are many ways to give your tablet a second life. Here is an overview.
Hand in your old tablet
When it comes to turning in old tablets, and unwanted electronics in general, there are a few options. You can trade in, sell, recycle or give away the device. In this article, we will list the options.
1. Trade-in
More and more (web) shops allow you to hand in your old one when purchasing a new gadget. If the tablet still looks good and is still being sold, such a trade-in service often yields money. You can use this amount to reduce the purchase price of a new tablet, for example.
Does the tablet no longer yield money, for example because the device is defective? Then you can still use the trade-in service. In that case, the (partner of the) webshop will take care of the further processing and valuable components will be recycled.
2. Sell a tablet yourself
Another straightforward solution for a redundant tablet is to sell it. For example, you can sell old electronics via Marktplaats. This trading website has many visitors, placing an advertisement is free and you have complete freedom in promoting your goods.
Be on your guard, because not all Marktplaats visitors have equally good intentions. Old tablets are popular with scammers and that is why you should be careful. For example, read up on the current prices on Marktplaats (or another trading platform such as Ebay, Facebook Marketplace or Tweakers) and do not let yourself be pressured.
Is the buyer coming to pick up the old tablet from you? Then make sure you are not alone at home and make the payment via Tikkie, for example. That way you will not be fobbed off with counterfeit money. Are you going to send the old tablet? Then do this by registered mail and only after you have received the money in your account.

3. Sell tablet to a company
Those who prefer to avoid Marktplaats negotiations can hand in their old tablet to a buyer. Such parties buy second-hand electronics on a regular basis, including phones and smartwatches.
Selling to a buyer is very simple. Go to the buyer’s website and look up your tablet (model), explain the condition of the device and whether there are any defects. A neat tablet without scratches and dents will of course yield more money than a model with the necessary user traces.
After filling out this form, the buyer makes an offer. Do you like this deal? Accept the offer and send the tablet. The purchasing party checks the device after receipt and, if everything is correct, transfers the promised amount.
4. Recycle tablet
You can also hand in old tablets at Wecycle. This recycling service collects electronic waste (also called e-waste) and recycles it. This way, valuable raw materials are reused as much as possible.
Wecycle has more than 13,000 collection points in the Netherlands. These bins are mainly located in (large) supermarkets, garden centres and municipal recycling centres. In addition to tablets, you can hand in almost any electronic device (with a battery or cord) at Wecycle.

5. Give away
You can also choose to hand in an old tablet to a charity. In this way, you contribute to a better world in an accessible way, for example by helping to train guide dogs for the blind or by making the lives of sick people better.
CliniClowns
Take the collection program of CliniClowns. This organization is committed to sick children and people with dementia. CliniClowns receives compensation for discarded electronics and uses this money to keep the organization running.
The money raised is used, among other things, to send clowns to sick children. This positive distraction ensures that the patient is not occupied with his or her illness for a while, but can relax and laugh.

KNGF
You can also hand in an old tablet to KNGF Guide Dogs. This foundation trains dogs to help blind and partially sighted people to live as independently as possible.
KNGF receives compensation for every tablet handed in. They work together with processor Eeko, just like CliniClowns. The money is used to train dogs and run the organization.
Collection points for KNGF can be found mainly at veterinarians and pet shops. Is there none near you? Request a free collection box to send multiple tablets (and other electronics) directly.

Choose a charity yourself
The Netherlands has many charities. It is impossible to name them all here.
Anyone who wants to donate his or her old tablet to charity should take a look at the Eeko website.
Eeko is not only the processor of CliniClowns and KNGF, but also of many other Dutch charities. They work together with Stichting Hulphond, Stichting Opkikker and KiKa, among others.
Eeko has collection points throughout the Netherlands and per location you can see for which charity the collection is for. The processor is responsible for collecting, processing, selling and possibly recycling the discarded electronics. The charity in question then receives a portion of the compensation.

Handing in your old tablet? First erase data
Whatever the next destination, make sure your tablet is ready for it. So reset the device to factory settings. As the name suggests, this will delete all your personal apps, files and photos.
This way, the next owner can use the tablet and your private information won’t end up on the street. In the article below, we show you how to factory reset an Android phone, but the instructions also work for tablets.
