Which app is best for generating free AI images? We will find it out for you.
Free AI Image Generation: The Best App
Thanks to modern AI tools, anyone can create beautiful images by simply giving a text command such as “a labradoodle running through the snow wearing a Santa hat”. But which app is best to use for this?
Some popular tools are not yet available in the Netherlands. For example, Meta has the option to generate images within Instagram and WhatsApp, but due to European legislation the company is not yet ready to release this in the Netherlands. Many other tools cost money. For example, you can only use Adobe’s Firefly to generate images if you pay monthly.
Other apps are mainly made to show you as many advertisements as possible in order to make some money from your prompts. Yet there are also good, free options in the Play Store.
Copilot and ChatGPT
- Generate images with: Dall-E
- Resolution: 1024×1024
We’ve previously praised the app Copilot for being the most accessible way to use AI. The app has changed a lot since then, especially in terms of design. It is striking that generating images in particular has become less practical. Previously, you would receive four results for each assignment, and you could immediately have another batch of four images made. Now you get one picture and the app sometimes starts to become difficult if you want alternatives.
However, Copilot remains an accessible option for quickly taking a picture. If you are not logged in you get five prompts for free, but with a free Microsoft account you can generate images to your heart’s content.
The ChatGPT app uses the same technology for free users. That’s because Copilot was created in collaboration with OpenAI.
Gemini
- Generate images with: Image 3
- Resolution: 2048×2048
Google has caught up with OpenAI by also creating an excellent image generator with Gemini. The tool briefly caused some controversy because historical figures, such as soldiers during World War II, were depicted with different skin colors. That has now been resolved.
It is nice that the images have a high resolution by default, while images from the free version of Copilot and ChatGPT are a lot smaller. An additional advantage of Gemini is that it is probably already on your smartphone anyway.
Leonardo.ai
- Generate images with: Leonardo, SDXL and more
- Resolution: dynamic
Leonardo.ai is a standout app on the Play Store. This app has free options and produces remarkably good images, which are clearly of higher quality compared to the images from the apps above. If you then decide to pay, you will be given a lot of options.
You can then create pictures from a sketch, change images in videos, edit existing pictures and remove backgrounds. You can even upload your own branded material to train the model. With the free version you get a limited number of tokens per day, so choose your prompts carefully.
Also interesting is that you get access to a range of different AI models, each with their own powers. For example, there is a model who is extra good at anime images, one who always makes cinematic images or one who tries to be as photorealistic as possible.
Conclusion
For most Android users who want to generate an image every now and then and don’t want to pay for it, Gemini is the most logical option. The pictures usually look good and you are offered them in relatively high resolution. ChatGPT/Copilot is a nice, accessible alternative to see if you get a different result.
If you want to take a more extensive approach, Leonardo.ai is an interesting option. You have to pay for most of the features in this app, but the free version is surprisingly strong. In terms of interface, Leonardo.ai is not nearly as accessible as a Gemini or Copilot, so this app is only interesting for those who are already a little handy with this technology.
