Apple continues development of CarPlay 2the long-awaited update for the infotainment system of compatible cars. Despite the absence on the market of the first models promised for 2024, new images leaked online they provide an insight into the custom widgets which could characterize this advanced version of CarPlay.
The images come from a European Union database where Apple has already deposited CarPlay 2 assets in the past.
Revealed widgets include:
- Clock: to view the time in a specific city.
- Weather forecast: with the weather forecast widget.
- Calendar: which highlights the next scheduled event.
- Navigation and Music: a combination of maps and songs playing.
- Musica: a widget dedicated exclusively to the music currently playing.
As you can see in the images, CarPlay 2 maintains a column of apps on the left side of the screen, a feature already familiar in the current version of CarPlay.
This new widget interface for CarPlay 2 looks very similar to the one already available on iPhone, iPad and Mac. This aspect could make the system immediately intuitive for those who use Apple devices, eliminating learning curves for regular users.
However, this familiarity raises an important question: Why doesn’t Apple also make custom widgets available on the current version of CarPlay? With CarPlay 2 still absent and many cars lacking support for this new generation, many users are wondering whether it wouldn’t make more sense to improve the current system instead of aiming for such an ambitious but delayed update.
Apple had promised the arrival of the first models compatible with CarPlay 2 by 2024, but to date the system remains a project under development. This delay may be due to the complexity of implementing a system that fully integrates with car displays and controls, handling functions such as the radio, temperature controls and more.
