Google is testing the function on selected users

The function should be in the application under the name Ask Photos (Ask for photos). It will allow users to quickly gather information from their photo library using generative AI. There is already a fairly intelligent search in the application, but the new feature will raise it to a higher level.

Google already showed how this feature will work earlier this year. In a short demo, a user asked Google Photos to show the best photo from each national park he visited. Generative AI then evaluated and displayed the objectively best photos from national parks.

The feature has now officially appeared to some users as part of a study within the framework pre-release. Google is using the study to try to get feedback from selected users, but it is not clear how many there are.

What does the feature look like?

On the cards Searching in the Google Photos app, they were shown “Ask Photos” and next to the search bar they have a prominent button “Ask” with the logo Gemini. Originally, Google displayed this feature as a dedicated tab within the app.

To help users, the function asks them “What would you like to see?” with examples of questions and, of course, the possibility to write your own question. There’s also a new page where the app asks users to match the names of multiple people in their library, which should help the generative AI make more accurate searches.
