The footballers of San Marino are celebrating the historic progress in the official competitions. The lowest-ranked team in the FIFA ranking fought its way from the “kid” to the C-division in the League of Nations thanks to Monday’s 3:1 triumph on the soil of Liechtenstein.

It was San Marino’s first ever victory on their opponents’ pitches and only their second competitive win ever. San Marino in Vaduz was losing 0:1 at halftime, but after the change of sides, Lorenzo Lazzari, Alessandro Golinucci and Nicola Nanni scored three points from the penalty spot.
The “dwarf” from the 30,000-strong micro-state on the Apennine peninsula thus surpassed Gibraltar by one point in the table and will perform a level higher in LN.
“Besides the serious risk of a heart attack, all I can say is that these guys made history tonight. They showed their worth as people and as athletes.
I cried with them,” said the visibly moved president of the local football union, Marco Tura, according to DPA.
Only in September did the players of San Marino get their first victory in more than 20 years, when they also beat Liechtenstein at home 1:0.
Before that, they only won in April 2004 in Serravalle in preparation and again against Liechtenstein (1:0).
“This time we were 0-1 down at half-time, but the boys were great after the break and they deserve what they achieved,” said Roberto Cevoli, San Marino’s national team coach.
