This is what it looks like at the top of the Saana fell – see the wonderful scenery

Saana fell, one of Finland’s most famous natural sites, lives up to its reputation. You can easily visit the summit on a day trip, as the round trip takes about four hours.

Saana offers wonderful landscapes

Located in Finnish Lapland, in the Enontekiö municipality, the Saana fell rises to 1,029 meters, and is one of the most famous natural attractions in Finland. It’s no wonder, because from the top there is a view that differs from the traditional Finnish landscape: the mountain landscape continues as far as the eye can see.

The majestic Saana is an impressive sight even from a distance, because it stands out far away already on the way to Kilpisjärvi, and you can’t miss the flat ridge. The height of the hill measured from Kilpisjärvi village is 556 meters, 1,029 meters above sea level.

Two ways to experience Saa

Saana can be taken over either by climbing to the top or alternatively by going around the fell. The five-kilometer long Saana nature trail starting from the Kilpisjärvi Hiking Center is a ring route that goes around the fell.

The popular route to the top of Saana is four kilometers long in one direction, and the route can be accessed either from the Kilpisjärvi Hiking Center or next to the Malla nature park parking area. The route to the top is an experiential way to take over one of Finland’s most famous fells.

Depending on your condition, you should reserve around four hours for the trip to the summit, as the ascent is challenging even for those in good shape, and you should reserve time to look at the scenery along the route. The route was renewed in the summer of 2019, so the path is in good condition and clearly marked – it is important to follow the route signs, because Saana is located in a nature reserve, so deviating from the route is not allowed.

Stock up on good equipment

Due to its location, Käsivarren’s fell in Lapland guarantees varying conditions, and you shouldn’t go to the top of Saana with too light equipment.

The route is gentle and in good condition at the beginning, but quickly turns into a challenging climb with steep steps. At the top, you are already walking among the rocks, in which case shoes with grippy soles are necessary. Correspondingly, the importance of dressing in layers is emphasized when the sweat caused by climbing the stairs hits the surface. There are plenty of excellent scenic spots on the route, by which it is easy to rest.

The landscapes that open from the top of Saana attract you to be quiet, but also require warm equipment, regardless of the season. If you plan to stay at the top and look at the scenery even for the duration of the picnic, it is worth packing plenty of warm clothes.

The return journey down from the summit is considerably faster than the outward journey, but you shouldn’t rush on the way back either, because the view not only of the Malla nature park but also of the Norwegian side is impressive.
