The 14 survivors of the Argos Georgia, the small ship wrecked in the waters of the Falkland Islands, spent 21 hours at sea. They survived thanks to the life rafts that these types of boats carry and that are equipped with food, water, blankets and even a first aid kit, says Antonio Valverde in the video.
For the use of life raftsThere is a protocol so that they can fulfill their function: saving the lives of the crew.
What’s inside the life raft?
Inside each raft there is everything necessary for survival: seasickness pills, a first aid kit, thermal blankets, food, a fishing kit and signalling equipment, lights and flares that help shipwrecked people to be seen from other vessels.
The largest sea lion gets seasick on these rafts, says José Andrés de los Bueis, CEO of Red Naval.
Fishing boats must always carry these rafts with twice the capacity of the crew. “If the boat has an accident on one side or side, have rafts on the other side,” says De los Bueis.
Las rafts are launched into the sea and in the water they deploy automatically.
In case of emergencies there is a meeting point, explains the former captain Carlos Lago. The crew must go there to put on their suits and lifevestHowever, despite the protocols in place when push comes to shove, these can go awry.
